In one of the experiment tubes, the party finds a (relatively) intelligent hobgoblin named Burlgadra, who claims to have been a human before being turned into this form by magebreeding experiments. He wants revenge against Donata, so he is brought along. Meanwhile, Magebred experiments are set loose in Clifftop, and Stahlstrauss and Marlamin go to battle them while the others enter Donata’s quarters.
Donata is accompanied by redspawn firebelchers, large creatures distantly related to red dragons, and magebred grimlocks. An old man with the Mark of Handling is present in the room, scribbling in a notebook, though Donata does not appear to notice him. After a short confrontation, a fight breaks out, but the grimlocks and redspawn are eventually surprised, and Donata severely injured by a rampaging Burlgadra. She begs for mercy, and offers the location of Zil’dejin’s body in return: it was purchased by a group called the ‘Emerald Claw’ who are picking it up elsewhere in Clifftop.
They also converse briefly with the old man, Rhys Seryan d’Vadalis, who claims to have been among the House Vadalis team responsible for creating the Magebred Lords in the first place. Evidently, the first generation of Magebred humans cannot see him. He is courteous to the party and invites Garmeth and Xulgos to join him at his home, the Hearth (a large House Vadalis ranch in Breland) after all is said and done. They say they will consider it, and the party leaves the room.
Notes: Garmeth tried to steal Rhys’ notebook while he was writing in it and succeeded, but Rhys noticed. The pages all appeared blank, and he gave it back to the old man.
Experience obtained: 1000 XP (all from combat)
