After killing Valen Vanatar and his escort of Throneholders, the party cuts Voraqael’s bindings to allow him to perform the necessary ritual to open the way to the Dreamheart’s chamber. A door opens in the wall, and Ryltas reveals that he has branded Voraqael during the last battle, much as was done to the Vulkoori drow encountered in the kitchens.
The door opens to a dark passage descending deep into the earth. Zil’dejin enters first and is blasted by invisible fire; the party begins examining the situation, and Ryltas walks past them, apparently impervious to the flames. Ultimately, Zil’dejin walks through the first half by soaking rags in the blood of Valen Vanatar and his knights and shields himself from the fire. Zan-kyri knows of a single-use codeword to disable the flame jets common to Giant ruins, while Xulgos gets past with acrobatics and help from his Wallwalker boots. Zil’dejin tries using Zan-kyri as a living shield for the last stretch, but this fails and both are burned. Conlon summons the ghost of a giant which leads him through the hall safely, along with Voraqael and Coref.
Ryltas is not visible when they reach the doors at the end of the hallway. Voraqael’s brand is removed by Zan-kyri but he is too weakened by the process to continue, so everybody else goes into the chamber, where Ryltas has found the Dreamheart and has now changed his mind: he now wants only to serve the Eldest. Fire giant skeletons are strewn everywhere, their lives apparently consumed in the sealing ritual, but two have been left alive, made “immortal” by the Dreamheart. They are under the command of Ryltas, who fights the party, but the combat is eventually won by the Eclipse Collective (and features some strategic brilliance on Zil’dejin’s part, as well as a brutal mid-air finisher by Conlon to kill Ryltas).
Conlon discovers he can wield the Dreamheart effectively and “hear” the Eldest trapped within, to some extent. After commanding the giants to stand down, the party begins discussion of what to do with the artifact now that they have possession of it.
