Zil’dejin, Conlon, and Xulgos, with Coref’s assistance, engage in combat with the volcanic dragon Oraxis and his fire archon servants. Whatever purpose Oraxis’ chamber once served when Scora Bael was still occupied by giants, it has become completely unrecognizable with burned and melted stone. A deep trench filled with molten rock occupies the end of the room, separating the egotistical dragon and self-proclaimed “volcano god” from the party.
Oraxis begins with the upper hand, and his fire archons are formidable enemies, but once his servants are defeated and Oraxis is left alone, he falls quickly. They find a small sort of hoard that he had kept, but he does not have the key necessary to enter the lower level of the ruins. They choose to investigate the drow in the western end of Scora Bael, which they have not yet visited.
On the way, they pass a central rotunda with numerous exits, one of which apparently leads downstairs — the way is locked, as they expected. The rotunda walls are covered with frescoes depicting the history of Scora Bael, though many have been burned away, much like Oraxis’ chamber.
