The Hands that Move the World

The Crypts

Zil’dejin, Morgue, Typhus, and Mikhal head into an adjoining crypt with cursed sarcophagi that constantly release zombies. After clearing most of the zombies and toppling the sarcophagi, thereby preventing more from freeing themselves, the party continues to find a smaller room with only one sarcophagus and the possessed skeleton of the former warlord of the keep, a man named Sir Keegan. Keegan tests them, and finds them worthy. He offers them his sword, called Aecris, and some artifacts in secret compartments in the altars found in the crypts they just left. These artifacts take the form of small images of dragons, carved (apparently) from platinum. After this, they set up camp in the crypt for the night.

Notes: Splug died in this encounter, having been basically ordered by Typhus to act as a very frail meat shield.

Back to the Keep

The battle continues where it left off previously, with the party fighting the gravehounds and the hag Ninaran. They quickly pull through and finish off their enemies, and find instructions on Ninaran’s body written by Kalarel (the same name they saw on an earlier letter) with a code phrase for entering the lower floor of the Shadowfell Keep. They then return to Winterhaven to meet Valthrun, who has finished studying the rib and explains its purpose as a ritual component to open the portal to Mabar in the keep. He wishes to come with them on their return to the keep to stop the ritual from taking place.

They are suspicious, but accept, and they go back to the keep, with the exception of Tam’elanath who stays behind to guard the village. They start heading further in to the only wing they have not yet explored, and find themselves in a crypt full of the dead. These zombies, however, are quite fragile, and they quickly clear the maze-like area.

The Winterhaven Graveyard

After ensuring Winterhaven is safe, Zil’dejin, Tam’elanath, Morgue, Lythanis and Mikhal break camp and go to the graveyard. It is completely still when they first arrive, and apparently abandoned. They decide to investigate one of the mausoleums, and in doing so reveal a hag who plagues Morgue with horrible visions. At this time, skeletons and undead hounds rise from their surroundings and begin attacking. They clear most of the skeletons, but the hag and the hounds still stand, and Morgue is unconscious on the ground.

The five now go further into the caves under the keep, and enter a room with a pool of stagnant water. The water is host to a blue amorphous blob, which they fight and defeat. Here, they find two letters, one written to somebody named Kalarel and the other being instructions for the messenger. After this, they decide to return to Winterhaven.

When they arrive, however, they find the gates closed. Padraig, lord of Winterhaven, tells them that the town is in danger; villagers have disappeared, and the dead appear to be rising from the nearby cemetery. Though they wish to investigate, the party sets up camp around the walls, sleeping in shifts to help protect the village.

Shadowfell Keep, 1st Floor (II)

Tam’elanath, Zil’dejin, Morgue and Lythanis continue into the keep, returning to the entrance chamber and taking a different route from there. They arrive at some sort of excavation site occupied by goblins, who are protected by guard drakes. Morgue inadvertently draws their attention, and the party fights the excavation crew, during which time Mikhal returns from Winterhaven. They then enter a natural cavern beneath the keep, where they encounter rats and an odd jelly creature. After fending these off, they are able to press further into the cave, where they find the lair of some creatures known as kruthiks. After clearing the lair, they take a brief rest.

Notes: the infamous “cloak over the head” scene took place here, as well as the occasion when Lythanis telephatically threw a bunch of rocks at his allies.

Typhus leaves the party temporarily, taking Splug with him. Mikhal leaves also to report to his mentor, Theoban Flamerule. The four remaining, Zil’dejin, Tam’elanath, Morgue and Lythanis, continue to the goblin chieftain’s chamber. After unsuccessfully trying to get past their alarm system, the goblins attack, along with the chieftain himself, a goblin (appropriately) named Balgron the Fat. The fight is close, but the four are ultimately successful, and they chose to spend the night in the chieftain’s fortified chambers.

Entering the Keep

Valthrun has nearly finished analyzing the Third Sinister Rib but is not yet done. He asks the party to help out the people of Winterhaven again in the meantime, and discusses the dark history of the nearby Shadowfell Keep with them. Evidently, the Winterhaunt is nearing, and the seal on the portal to Mabar in that place may be weakening. Valthrun believes somebody is personally responsible, and sends the party to investigate.

They head to the ruins of the keep, which now consists only of rubble and the somewhat-preserved lower floors beneath the earth where they are met with traps and hostile goblins. After fighting through the entry chamber, they pick one of the adjoining corridors and head there to find a torture chamber, containing more goblins and a hobgoblin torturer. They fight them, and free from the nearby cells a goblin named Splug, who tells them where to find the goblin chieftain’s chamber and pledges his service to the party.

Behind the Waterfall

While in Winterhaven waiting for Valthrun to study the rib, the party is hired by the lord of the village to help with a “security issue.” This issue happens to be the kobolds plaguing the roads, who make their lair behind a nearby waterfall. They go here, and begin fighting the kobolds outside before proceeding within. In this cave, they seem to be obeying a strange-looking creature named Ironteeth, who, with his kobolds, prove a substantial challenge for the party. Eventually, though, they finish off the dolgrim and his allies, and return to Winterhaven for their reward.

A Visit to the Dragon Burial Site

Zil’dejin, Tam’elanath, Morgue and Typhus explore Winterhaven and meet with the resident wizard, Valthrun the Prescient. Before leaving, they stop at the blacksmith and meet the Silver Flame paladin Mikhal Thanesman who travels with them as they head out to the dragon burial site. On the way there, they are once more ambushed by kobolds, and during this fight they meet the kalashtar psion Lythanis Zyk, who also accompanies them once the battle is finished, being a wanderer by nature.

They arrive at the dragon burial site and see the elven woman they rescued before, who turns out to be a changeling seeking the Third Sinister Rib. The body of the agent they were sent to find, Douven Staul, lies dead nearby. A fight breaks out, but the party triumphs and takes the rib. They return to Eilian the Old who tells them to speak with Valthrun about the rib.
