The Hands that Move the World

Valenar IV: Shaelas Tiraleth - Dreambreaker

Zarantyr 3, 1000 YK

The party meets up with High King Vadallia and his warband, then proceeds into the Narthex, where a pale human with a Sarlonan accent greets them, surrounded by (presumably) the last standing nerra. He explains calmly that he is the “rightful owner” of the Rod of Order, and politely asks for it returned. He says that he is Drokkroth, once the sorcerer-king of an ancient Sarlonan kingdom called Corvagura. He has made a pact with the quori, granting him eternal life (through lichdom), and has acted as their servant for over a thousand years. He wants the rod to sever his connections with the quori and rebuild his kingdom. They find out that he is, in truth, a dragon called the “Dreambreaker”, though he prefers human form and does not like the epithet.

The party is divided on whether or not to give him the Rod, but Vadallia grows infuriated as he learns that his prophetic dreams were just a tool Drokkroth used to try and take the artifact from Grandir’s dream, intended to sever Vadallia’s connection on the premise that elves don’t naturally dream to extract the item. He describes the party’s involvement as a “happy coincidence.” Things turn south and Vadallia attacks. Drokkroth opens a portal and escapes through it. The party fights through the nerra in the ruined library, tools appropriated by Drokkroth, before following him through the portal.

They end up in the lost feyspire of Taer Lian Doresh, the Fortress of Fading Dreams, situated at once in both Eberron and Dal Quor. They are in an arena-like structure, empty except for them, Drokkroth, and an imprisoned Vadallia. Drokkroth explains that this is his “pocket” of Dal Quor, where the quori cannot see them. He says he has to kill the High King, as he knows too much and is succumbing to quori influence. The party does not agree with this, and reluctantly engage him in combat.

Drokkroth fights him first in his sorcerer form, but when he is bisected by Derli’s axe, his torso reforms into an unusual skeletal dracolich form. Here, he keeps the party suppressed by mind control and forced sleep, but Derli again delivers a finishing blow by corkscrewing through the dragon’s chest, and spinning about on his landing to cleave the dragon. The bones reform after they are shattered, however, and the dragon’s shadow becomes flesh, forming the silver dragon Drokkroth was when he was alive. The battle is difficult, but he is caught between Zil’dejin and Derli. Xulgos delivers a series of eye rays compelling the dragon to take to the sky, but as he flaps his wings to lift off, Derli and Zil’dejin attack at once, severing his wings. The body of the dragon slams into a nearby column, and the flesh withers away.

They raid his hoard and rest in the dragon’s safe “pocket” for the night, exhausted.
